The University of Delaware women’s outdoor track & field team will be shooting for its first Colonial Athletic Association title this weekend as the Blue Hens take part in the CAA Championships at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium beginning Friday.
A total of 33 members of the Blue Hens will be competing in 21 different events beginning Friday morning with the 9:30 a.m. The two-day meet will continue on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the men’s and women’s team champions being decided later that afternoon.
The Blue Hens will be looking to improve upon last year’s fifth place finish - tied for the highest for UD since joining the league in 2002 - and look to dethrone defending champion James Madison.
Delaware will enter a host of student-athletes with an eye on a conference titles led by sprinter Vicky Caruso, hurdlers Latoya James and Breanna Nicholson, middle distance runner Lindsay Prettyman, weight thrower Alana Pantale, and jumpers Amira Idris and Kelsey Evancho.
Caruso is the defending 200 meter champion who also placed third in the 400 meters a year ago after winning the 400 meter competition in 2011. James placed second in the 100 meter hurdles last spring after placing fifth in the event in 2011 while Prettyman has finished as the runner-up in the 800 meters each of the last two seasons.
Pantale owns four career top five finishes at the CAA meet in throws, including a second place showing in the shot put and a fourth place finish in the discus a year ago. In addition, Idris was fourth in the triple jump last spring while Nicholson finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles and Evancho finished fourth in the high jump a year ago.
